When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it – a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand – as a final test. If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there’s a clash best between the two, it’s bad art.- PABLO PICASSO

Zimbabwe President Mugabe Had Heart Attack But Government Refuses To Respond

Since Tuesday, media reports and online rumors have been spreading that Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe suffered a heart attack. The rumors originated from a letter the Zimbabwean newspaper ZimEye received from an official in the country’s Central Intelligence Organization (CIO) which claimed the 91-year-old head of state had suffered a heart attack while on holiday.

Rafa Benitez releases statement after being sacked by Real Madrid

Rafa Benitez has released a statement following his sack as Real Madrid manager after just seven months and three losses. In a statement released on his website, the 55-year-old Madrid native thanked those at Real Madrid for allowing him to work at the club and wished his successor Zinedine Zidane luck for the future. Read the statement after the jump…

He wrote:

“Now, at the end of my time as first team coach of Real Madrid, I would like to use this article to say goodbye to everyone at every level of the club. I want everyone at the club from the board of directors, executives, workers and all of the fans, know that it has been an honour and privilege to be in charge at this club where I grew up as a person, player and coach from the lowest categories through to the first team.

“As a Madridista from Madrid, steeped in the traditions and values of this institution, which I learned in the old sports city of Castellana, it has been an honour to work for these colours. I would especially like to thank everyone at the new sports city and the Santiago Bernabéu who since my first steps through the door have supported me and made my work easier. Thanks to all for helping.

“With all that I have said still in mind, I would like to wish good luck to Zinedine Zidane, my successor, and his staff. To all the players, coaches and staff in both Valdebebas and Bernabéu, I wish all the best and also good luck.

“With all my respect and thanks… HALA MADRID and NOTHING ELSE. “

We’ve used all channels to warn Nigeria over Shiite leader - Iran

IRAN says it is using all diplomatic channels to pursue the release of a prominent Shia Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who was arrested by the Nigerian army last month.

“We have used all those channels to warn them (Nigeria) regarding this issue. So, hopefully the government… would adopt wise action given the sensitive situation,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hoseyn Jaberi-Ansari, told reporters in the capital, Tehran.

Members of the Sheikh El-Zakzaky’s Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) clashed with the army in the northern city of Zaria.

Campaign group Human Rights Watch said at least 300 IMN members were killed and quickly buried in a mass grave during the incident. The Nigerian military denied the claim.

The military accused the pro-Iranian sect of trying to assassinate army chief, General Tukur Buratai, which it denies.

Iran is currently embroiled in a diplomatic row with Saudi Arabia over the execution of a prominent Shia cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Thugs invade local government, chase away councillors in Edo

The leadership crisis rocking Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State took a violent turn as suspected thugs, on Monday morning, invaded the council secretariat, beating and chasing away councillors out of the secretariat.

The councilors had last Thursday suspended the acting chairman of the council, Mrs Sweet Ikponmwosa, alleging that she could not pay workers’ salaries and account for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Mrs Ikponmwosa, however, shunned her suspension as she arrived the council secretariat on Monday morning to resume her duties after the suspected thugs chased away the councillors.

The atmosphere was tense at the council secretariat as policemen searched workers who resumed for duties after the New Year holiday.

The suspected thugs forcefully opened the office of the acting chairman and reportedly tore the clothes of one of the councillors, Ernest Edebiri.

Edebiri, however, said the acting chairman remained suspended and vowed to expose what he called the ‘shady deals in the council.’

'I am buried over there... I was shot in my knees': Readers reveal their children's haunting stories of past lives... so why DO so many kids insist they have lived before?

We recently reported on the phenomenon of young children believing they had former lives. Many as young as two or three give vivid details of past experiences, startling parents with their articulate accounts. A number of stories have been collected in a book, Memories Of Heaven, by the motivational speaker Dr Wayne Dyer. Since then, scores of you have written in to tell us how your own young children have come out with perplexing and sometimes painful ‘revelations’ about their past selves. Some readers will believe these ‘memories’ of being ancient Egyptians, soldiers or reborn family members are merely the product of fertile imaginations. Others will find the extraordinary details coming from the mouths of those so young harder to explain.

One thing is for certain: they make compelling reading.

Memories of Egypt

The article about children who feel they have had past lives particularly resonated with me.

When my grandson was about two, he started to talk about ‘his other mummy’. He frequently asked when he would be going back to her.

I was quite spooked and didn’t want to mention it to my daughter.

I asked where he had lived and he told me Egypt, in a house made of mud.

When I asked about his ‘other mummy’, he said he did not know what had happened to her because he had been bitten by a snake and died . . . and he never saw her again.

Eventually, I told my daughter, expecting her to laugh and think it was just his imagination, but she said he had talked to her of his other life.

He continued to mention his past life until he went to school and then it faded away. He is now 12 and cannot remember anything at all about it.

‘I am buried over there’

Our youngest child, Estelle, was born 16 years after her sister, Virginia, had died in a car crash aged six months.

Estelle looked very similar to Virginia, with big dark eyes and thick black hair.

When Estelle was a year or so old, just beginning to talk, we were driving near the cemetery where Virginia was buried — the first time we had visited the area since Estelle was born.

Out of the blue, from her baby seat, Estelle said ‘I am buried over there’ and pointed towards the cemetery, which could not be seen from the road. We were shocked, and said nothing.

One night, when she was in bed, she looked at me and said, ‘Can I have a wide straw hat and long dress like I had before with my other Mum and Dad?’ I agreed and asked when that was. ‘A long time ago when I lived in a house with a big field of flowers around it.’

‘We fly up to see God’

My son, Jamie, must have been about three when he began talking about a little boy called Chris.

I thought it was probably an imaginary friend, as some children have at that age, because he didn’t know any children with that name.

When I asked him about Chris, Jamie said: ‘Chris is a little boy and at night we fly up and see God.’

I thought this was very unusual because my husband and I are not particularly religious.

My mother-in-law then told me that she’d had a brother, who died before she was born. His name was Chris.

I ordered the death certificate and his name was ‘Chris’, rather than ‘Christopher’, and he had died aged four of a childhood illness.

He knew how to ride

From the age of two-and-a-half, my son, James, would tell us the same story. He had lived in a wooden house with stairs next to a ‘big water’. One day, someone left the door open and he walked out, fell in the water and drowned. He went to heaven, and then he was James.

Aged four, he cried when he saw a horse on the television. He was hitting the screen, saying his horse was waiting, and he had promised it he would go back. He was so upset that I took him to some stables the next day. When a pony was brought out, James knew exactly how to ride, even though he had never even been on a donkey.

A few people I consulted about this all said the same thing. By the age of five he’d stop talking about it, and sure enough he did. It certainly opened my mind and today I am a firm believer in past lives.

Salute from little soldier

When Diamond, our daughter, was about two, she would use words so uncommon I had to open the dictionary to find their meanings.

When she saw a new food, she would call out its name. Her mother and I would mutter under our breath: ‘This child has been here before.’

Once when she saw a military parade on TV for the very first time, she screamed ‘Soldiers!’ She jumped out of her seat, stood to attention and gave a perfect salute. The men parading were neither at attention nor giving a salute.

When we asked if she was a soldier in her first life, she smiled and replied coyly: ‘Yes, Daddy. I was in the military before.’

Primary school teachers in Kwara begin strike on Monday over 4-month unpaid salaries

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Kwara State says primary school teachers in the state will embark on strike on Monday to protest the non-payment of their four months’ salary arrears.

Chairman of the union, Musa Abubakar, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kaiama, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The strike action will begin just when schools are expected to resume from their first term holiday.

Abubakar said that the union could no longer guarantee industrial harmony in the state following the non-payment of their salary arrears.

He said that the primary school teachers in the state had been loyal and dedicated to duty in spite of the failure of the government to pay them salaries for months.

“I want to believe they have tried. If the members of the National Assembly are not paid for four months, I doubt if you will see anybody in the red or green chambers.

“So for us to have worked for four months without pay, I think the teachers have tried and that is why we told the government that we cannot guarantee any industrial harmony again.

“We cannot guarantee any teacher going to class on Monday to teach with an empty stomach except the problem is addressed,” he said.

He explained that the union would start a sit-at-home strike action beginning on Monday to press home its demand.

According to him, workers from other sectors will soon join in the strike action in the spirit of solidarity.

The NUT leader criticised the state government for creating a dichotomy between primary schools teachers and their counterparts in the secondary schools.

He claimed that a Supreme Court judgment in 2002 had made state governments responsible for the management and funding of primary schools in the country.

“It is just unfortunate that a situation like this revolves around primary school teachers in the country. I want to say without mincing words that if that trend should continue, the primary school system will soon collapse,” the union leader stated.
