Of The Fisherman And The Fish: Of Jonathan And Billion Naira Greed
Our elders often remind us to remember where we are coming from, the son of whom we are and our roots. Though these elders' mouth may be toothless and have foul smells but it doesn't change the fact that wise words pass out through those mouths from the depth of their heart.
We Nigerians have come to accept corruption as a way of life, we see corruption as a legal undertaking and patriotic duty expected from all true born Nigerians. We go about worshiping and idolizing all "John the Reapers" of our nation. We have come to accept with humble and ignorant shame the scarlet of disgrace called Corruption in the Corridors of Power.
I believe not all men are or were born dirty. I believe that even our so called thief thief leaders once have the zeal and thirst for a better Nigeria. I believe Ebele Jonathan also had this dream in his more younger days. I could vividly paint a picture of him on one of his father's two canoes thinking aloud in the middle of the river that one day, he will be in a position to remove poverty from the land so another man's child won't have to throw nets round the clock in dangerous waters in order to survive and won't have to walk for miles to school without shoes. But come to think of it, I believe Jonathan must have read the story about that fisherman and his greedy old wife. I believe Jonathan must have always gone out to the river every night with the hopes of catching a gold fish that will grant all his wishes in his net. For those of you who don't know the story of the fisherman that I believe Jonathan must have read while in school, here is the summary:
The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish is a fairy tale in verse by Alexander Pushkin in 1833 about an old man and woman who have been living poorly for many years. They have a small hut, and every day the man goes out to fish. One day, he throws in his net and pulls out a golden fish. The fish pleads for its life, promising any wish in return. However, the old man does not want anything, and lets the fish go. When he returns and tells his wife about the golden fish, she gets angry and tells her husband to go ask the fish for a new washboard, as theirs is broken, and the fish happily grants this small request. The next day, the wife asks for a new house, and the fish grants this also. Then, in succession, the wife asks for a palace, to become the ruler of her province, to become the tsarina, and finally to become the Ruler of the Sea and to subjugate the golden fish completely to her boundless will. As the man goes to ask for each item, the sea becomes more and more stormy, until the last request, where the man can hardly hear himself think. When he asks that his wife be made the Ruler of the Sea, the fish cures her greed by putting her back in the old cottage and giving back the broken washboard.
Our dear Mr. President Goodluck Jonathan is a classic example of the fisherman's wife. Even if it were to be me after reading such story amidst hardship and suffering, I would have sworn that if I by chance lay my hands on the golden fish, I would hold on to it and make it do my bidding till I eventually squeeze the life out of it.
Mr. Ebele Azikwe Jonathan's wish came through the day he marched into the throne room in Aso Rock. After such a long and tedious journey to the dream land, after so much "Oga Yes Sir" and "Oga Madam Yes Ma", after so much bribing and begging, after so much constant turning of the other eye, so much pretense and made in china loyalty. He finally met the gold fish. In this case, the fish wasn't in his net - it was in his pocket. The Golden fish called Nigeria has been successfully trapped in the hands of the greedy son of Mr. Goodluck the fisherman from Bayelsa.
I am here dying of hunger and working my Bottom off round the clock in order to survive through the next day and somebody is somewhere spending over 3.3 billion naira on travel within one year alone! Haba! this is wickedness of the highest order! It should no longer be permitted. How can i vote for a man to make me grow fat only for the man to get fat from me!
It is no news how we have always been treated in Nigeria. But even if we are a tired, lazy and fearsome lot. Does that mean we as Nigerians have no sense of dignity left in us? Does it mean that we enjoy the meager life style we have been living in? We have always allowed ourselves to get carried away by "Bling Bling" achievements that are always advertised by our elected officials, we don't seem to care if those achievements are real or they only existed in the world of theory - we are content as far as we are hearing those regular updates from the office of our leaders.
We have to say NO and stand up to fight for our rights. We have to reclaim our country back from the hands of one man that spent over 1 Billion Naira on feeding for a year alone and also 3.3 Billion Naira on overseas trips alone. We have been molested, pushed to the wall, even our mere existence has been trampled upon because they think we are dumb, because they know that Nigerians are afraid of the MOPOL and the Sojo boys, they know this because they are Nigerians too and that also points out one point - they are also afraid of us - they are afraid of our impending anger and temperament, they are also afraid of our growing impatience and thirst for freedom. That is why they keep fortifying themselves with heavy security
The time of awakening is now. My brothers and sisters, let us rise up and fight for our rights. Let us demand for justice. Remember, it is one for all and all for one. It is only through our collective unity that Nigeria can be great!
Long Live The Federal Republic of Nigeria
God Bless The Federal Republic of Nigeria
God Bless us all!
