Emir of Borgu, Haliru Dantoro dies @ 77

Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Haliru Dantoro (Kitoro III), is dead, aged 77.

He was said to have died yesterday, in a German hospital after a brief illness.

The late emir is due for burial as soon as his body arrives from Germany.

Kitoro, the third highest ranking traditional ruler in Niger state, was a politician in the Second Republic and the short-lived Third Republic, winning election into the Senate on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in 1992.

News of his death got to the state yesterday evening.

He ascended the Borgu Kingdom throne on February 3, 2000, after the death of his predecessor, Alhaji Musa Mohammadu.

Dantoro was the Emir who endowned the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu the title “Jagaban,” meaning “Leader of Warriors.”

Reacting however, the Niger State Government yesterday described the deceased as  a man of exemplary character; humble, respectful, devoted and dedicated to the development of Borgu Kingdom, Niger State and Nigeria in general.

The Niger State Government said he was “highly trustworthy and contributed immensely in fashioning out pragmatic mechanism to improving the existing circumstances of the people of his domain and Nigerlites as a whole.”

It enjoined the people to pray to the Almighty God to grant him eternal rest and also give the family, government and people of Niger State the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

The immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Mu’azu Babagida Aliyu, also commiserated with the people of Niger State and Borgu Kingdom over the death of the Emir, describing him as an exemplary leader and a bridge builder.

Dantoro, he said, was “a great leader and his network of friends extends beyond the shores of Nigeria. He was indeed unique in his leadership and deep in his faith in Allah.

“May his exemplary leadership in promoting peace, unity and progress in Nigeria be remembered as his legacy towards making Nigeria a better place to live.

“I therefore have no doubt that Allah SWT will grant him Aljannah.”

ELECTION TRIBUNALS: PDP accuses Buhari of interference

•Says Amaechi’s confirmation as minister, a death knell on APC’s anti-graft war

•APC dismisses allegations, advises PDP to re-brand

By Henry Umoru

NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the presidency of undue interference in the Judiciary, Legislature and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which it said was unacceptable.

Specifically, the PDP accused the presidency of using the Department of State Service, DSS to influence election petition tribunal and court rulings in favour of the APC.

Rising from a meeting held at the Ondo State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, the PDP National Caucus also lampooned Senators elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress, APC, for confirming former governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as a minister, saying the action was a death knell on APC’s war against corruption.

Amaechi was on Thursday confirmed by Senate when all but one Senator in the PDP caucus walked out of the Senate Chambers.

Hailing its senators who staged a walk out from the Senate Chambers during the confirmation of Amaechi, the PDP describing the action as good for democracy.

It said: “We salute the courage and unity of purpose of our senators especially as demonstrated in the Senate chambers in their collective stand against impunity and corruption, in line with the wishes and aspirations of the Nigerian people. The PDP states that what the APC senators did is a death knell on their party’ s pretentious war against corruption.

“The PDP further notes that whilst former APC governors are being rewarded with ministerial appointments, their PDP counterparts are being hounded and harassed in the selective war against corruption. The party reiterates its commitment to the unity of Nigeria and the continued development of democracy in the country.”

In a communiqué signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the the opposition party urged President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, intervene and save the nation’s democracy from drifting into a dictatorship.

The Communiqué read: “The National Caucus carefully reviewed the political developments in the nation’s polity and resolved as follows.

“That there is serious cause for concern in the nation’s political environment, especially as it concerns the survival of the nation’s democracy.

“That the gains recorded in the 16 years of nurturing of democracy in the country by the PDP is rapidly being eroded with non-functioning of basic tenets of democracy and perpetuation of actions tilting towards dictatorship.

“That the insensitivity of the ruling government to very critical issues being raised by the opposition is a huge threat to viable democracy and dangerous to the peace, unity and progress of the country.

“That the undue interferences by the executive arm of government on the activities of the judiciary, legislature and INEC using the DSS is clearly unacceptable to the PDP as well as the Nigerian people and the party resolved to vigorously resist such.

“That the party finds it offensive and provocative, the judiciary’s handling of cases involving it in election tribunals in some states, particularly, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Imo, Taraba, Ogun, Plateau and Lagos states. The tainted judgements of these tribunals, which are evidently products of arm-twisting from the nation’s security operatives under the direct command of an APC member remains unacceptable to us.

“The PDP states that the conclusive evidence of external influence on the Rivers State governorship election tribunal is the fact that it was able to deliver its judgement within 24 hours, in a case that had nearly 100 witnesses, 1000 pieces of documentary evidences and nine counsel’s final written addresses; each not less than 40 pages. The decision, in view of the rather interesting history of the case, indicates that the judiciary, like the PDP and the Nigerian electorate are victims of the

APC-led Federal Government.

“The party expects the judiciary, as an institution to restore its image by taking immediate measures to protect itself from political interferences as well as ensure that needed steps are taken at the appellate levels to remedy the embarrassing ruling by some of the election petitions tribunals.

“The party has also noted clandestine moves by the APC to use various agencies of government, to manipulate the processes and rig the outcome of the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states in their favour and vowed to deploy every means within the law to resist such.

“That the party calls on President Muhammadu Buhari, as the leader of the country, to stand up for justice and equity and halt the undemocratic attitudes of agents of government in the interest of peace and stability.”

APC dismisses allegations

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the allegation, describing it as a rehash of the opposition party’s infantile whinnying which will not save it from going down unless it rebrands most urgently.

APC spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in his reaction said: ‘’It is time for the PDP to take a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and change everything that is ugly about the party, instead of wasting its energy and time on irrelevancies,’’ the party said in a

statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

It said the PDP cannot continue to do things in its trademark old, crooked ways and expect a different result.

“The PDP just doesn’t get it, despite being the architect of its own fall from power. The days of winning elections with the aid of slush funds, brigandage, deceit and rigging are gone forever, hence the PDP must return to the drawing board to fashion out decent and empirical ways of repackaging and selling itself to Nigerians, just like the opposition did when they decided to come together,’’ APC said.

The party said the PDP’s ceaseless and ill-advised attack on the judiciary, now its favourite whipping boy, the endless put-down of government agencies and the demonization of everyone but itself will fetch the party nothing but political grief.

“Instead of a blanket and unsubstantiated accusation against the judiciary over the election petition tribunal rulings in Rivers and Akwa Ibom, the PDP would have shown itself to be a serious party if it had provided statistics on how many of the cases filed at the various election petition tribunals nationwide, after the 2015 elections, have so far been decided in favour of the PDP and the APC, so that Nigerians can see whether the PDP has not won any single petition or

whether all the cases have been won by the APC.

“The PDP has forgotten that the same judiciary that it is wilfully castigating today had decided many election petitions in favour of the party and against the APC, whether at the Governorship, National Assembly or State Assembly levels, and the ruling party has not opted to bring the whole house crashing down on everyone just because of that.

“Going down the memory lane, when the PDP took itself to court in 2007 over the Governorship election in Rivers, the same judiciary that has now become an apparition to the PDP awarded the Governorship to a candidate who never even featured on the ballot because the party crookedly substituted his name. Then, the PDP did not see the judiciary as being used by the then PDP Administration, neither did the opposition castigate the judiciary,’’ it said.

Asks PDP to re-brand

APC admonished the PDP to stop yowling and engage in strategic thinking that could propel the party forward, rather than continue to be nostalgic about its past, which is neither dignifying nor enlivening.

“The 16 years of the PDP – which the party has continued to shamelessly celebrate – are nothing to celebrate, either for the impunity that characterized the party’s governance, the massive looting of the national treasury that is still being assessed or the bastardization of all the values that the nation holds dear. Thankfully, President Muhammadu Buhari has brought sanity to governance even as the PDP has continued to try to distract him with their endless wailing.

“Our parting word for the PDP: Stop throwing juvenile tantrums against everyone, especially the judiciary. Stop wasting your energy on frivolous accusations. Learn how to communicate your thoughts to Nigerians in a more civilized way and put your shoulder to the wheel if you want to reincarnate as a force to be reckoned with in our country’s political firmament,’’ APC said.

PDP Senators staged a walkout from their chambers this afternoon just before Amaechi’s confirmation. They had insisted that the senate stick with the recommendation by the Ethics and Privileges committee that looked into all petitions leveled against the former Rivers governor and recommended that his confirmation be suspended due to the various court cases on alleged corrupt practices against him. The Senate still went ahead to confirm him. See more photos after the cut

Samsung mobile took photo of thief when he used wrong PIN and emailed it to the owner

Claire Rose, 28, from Hull, activated the app when she realised her £450 Samsung smartphone was missing, and it emailed her the photo, which looks like the pickpocket she believes took it.

Police are looking for a phone thief who was caught out by an app which automatically took a picture of him when he typed in the wrong PIN code and emailed it to the owner.

Claire Rose, 28, from Hull, activated the app when she realised her £450 Samsung smartphone was missing, and it emailed her the photo which she passed on to police.

The man in the picture looks similar to the man she believes stole her phone when she was walking up the street.

She claims that it was in the pocket of her coat, which was hanging on her bag, but a man who was walking behind her – the one in the photo – told her it had fallen on the floor.

The Lookout app also told her where the phone was, which was near her home, and she passed the information on to police.

Miss Rose said: ‘Then this man came up to me and said I’d dropped the coat so I turned around to pick it up and noticed my phone had been taken from the coat pocket – but when I looked up he had gone.’

Miss Rose added: ‘I don’t know exactly what happened – I think he must have pulled the coat off, it can’t have just fallen off.

Man kills, buries pregnant girl friend

THe SHOCK, which engulfed the people of Ezeakam,

Eziudo community in Ezinihitte Local Government Area of

Imo State, still persists as news of how a young man from

the community, allegedly killed his pregnant girl friend

through the administration of a local concoction spread in

the community. The deceased 25-year old lady, who was

identified as Chinonye Ella, was allegedly dating the 39-

year old Chamberlin Ojoko before she died July 20, 2015.

While Chinonye lived and operated from Umuahia, Abia State, her boy friend resided and also operated from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with members of his immediate family. Giving a graphic detail of the ugly incident, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, said

that the deceased lady boarded the same vehicle with Ojoko sometime in December 2014, at Achingali in Obowo local council area of Imo State, had a close chat which later led to the exchange of telephone numbers.

The CP also said that from police investigations, Ojoko

regularly invited Chinonye to Owerri, when they lodged in

hotels of his choice and had fun-filled times

together. “After any such outing, Ojoko gave his girl friend

between N3,000 and N4,000 to cover her transport

expenses.

This, continued until Chinonye informed her boy friend

that she was pregnant,” the CP recounted. The pregnancy

aspect of the relationship apparently unsettled the man

and he started making plans to convince his friend to

abort the unborn child.

“Having succeeded in convincing the lady to abort the

baby, the suspect, on July 20, 2015, took Chinonye to an

uncompleted building at Ezeakam, Eziudo and gave her

the local concoction he had earlier procured for the

abortion,” the CP said. The Imo police boss also said that

not long after the concoction was administered on the

lady, she started experiencing severe pain in her tummy

and later died on the spot, stressing that the man buried

her close to the building.

Sensing that he had accomplished his mission, possibly

undetected, Ojoko calmly scampered to his Port Harcourt

base, not knowing that a little girl clearly saw him as he

lifted the body of his girl friend and buried it close to the

uncompleted house. South East Voice gathered that the

little girl eventually narrated what she saw to the owner of

the uncompleted building, Dr. Ukaegbu, who later brought

in the officers of Ezinihitte Divisional Police.

Armed with this report, homicide detectives from the State

Police Headquarters, Owerri, were quickly brought into

the picture and investigation commenced. The police then

mobilized and set off to Port Harcourt, taking along with

them Dr. Ukaegbu and the suspect’s younger brother,

Pastor Sopuruchi Ojoko. Narrating the little he knew about

the entire story, the Pastor recalled that he saw his elder

brother and his girl friend at about 3p.m. on the fateful

day, pointing out that the duo never entered the family

house but headed towards Eziudo Road.

“At about 9p.m., my brother returned to the house

without the girl. He requested for a shovel. He did not

return till about 11p.m. I sought to know where he was

coming from at that late hour and he said that he went to

the toilet,” the pastor said. Continuing, the suspect’s

younger brother said that when information reached the

family that Chamberlin murdered his girl friend, he took

the police officers to Port Harcourt, where he was

arrested.

Giving his own account of the event at the State Police

Headquarters, Owerri, where he is currently cooling his

heels, Mr. Ojoko confirmed that he took his girl friend to

an uncompleted building on July 20, 2015, at about

6.30p.m. “My girl friend took the herbal medicine and

later started experiencing serious pain. Then she died. I

ran to my house and took a shovel. I carried her body to

the side of the building, dug a shallow grave and buried

her there,” Ojoko said.

Meanwhile, the CP confirmed that the late lady’s body had

been exhumed and post mortem examination done,

adding that his major concern as at the time of the

interview, was how to connect the relations of the dead

lady. “The Command is very desirous to get in touch with

the immediate relations of the late lady, given that her

telephone handset, which could have assisted the police

in this regard, was thrown away by the suspect,” the CP

said.

He then appealed to members of the public to provide

information that would assist the Police in locating the

relations of the deceased lady, who are believed to be

residing in Umuahia, Abia State.

Legendary international jewel thief Doris 'Diamond' Payne, 85, is arrested for stealing $690 earrings from Saks Fifth Avenue despite the career criminal claiming she had retired after 60-years as a con artist

Doris Payne, 85, has a criminal record as a jewel thief spanning 60 years

At the height of her infamy she was wanted in two separate continents

While in jail a decade ago she swore she was done with her life of crime

But she was caught stealing $690 earrings from a Saks Fifth Avenue store

Legendary jewel

Legendary jewel thief Doris ‘Diamond’ Payne – a career criminal once wanted on two continents – has been arrested aged 85 for stealing earrings from a department store.

Sweet, petite and immaculately turned out, Payne may be the world’s most unlikely international jewel thief.

The 85-year-old has gained infamy for a six-decade criminal career during which she has traveled the world to swipe millions of dollars worth of jewels by making staff ‘forget’ she was carrying them.

Her incredible story has even been turned into a documentary film; The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne. There is speculation that a biopic is in the works with Academy Award winner Halle Berry set to star as Payne.

Ten years ago, when she was 75 years old, the thief swore she was done with a lifetime of pilfering jewels across two continents. Several arrests later, in 2013, she said again that she was leaving that life behind.

But it seems that old habits die hard. On a recent visit to Saks Fifth Avenue department store at a mall in Atlanta’s upscale Buckhead neighborhood, the octogenarian was allegedly unable to resist the lure of a bit of sparkle.

Naked burglar gets in bed with couple, discovers the man has a gun and flees

An Oregon man was arrested Thursday after he broke into a Portland home, stripped naked, crawled into bed with the couple who live there and kissed the man — who turned out to have a gun — police said.

According to NBC News reports, Richard Dean Defeudis, 32, was held on $310,000 bail in the Multnomah County Jail pending arraignment Friday on charges of first- and second-degree burglary, first-degree sex abuse and unlawful use of a weapon.

An incident report says Defeudis broke into the home about 3:40 a.m. on Thursday morning and began stealing items of value from the home.

He then removed all of his clothes and climbed into bed with the unidentified man and woman who live there, and for some reason kissed the man, it says.

The man woke up to find the burglar sitting on top of him, holding a knife, police said. When the man pulled a gun, the burglar hurriedly picked up his pants and fled, chased by the now fully awake man, who fired three shots but missed, according to the report. Then they called 911.

Defeudis, who has an extensive arrest record in Oregon and California, was arrested in a vacant house nearby and was treated at a hospital for possible drug-related symptoms, police said.

The victims, who weren’t identified, aren’t expected to face any charges, police said.

It’s an extra special day for KatyCats everywhere! Katy Perry  turns 31 today, October 25, and you can bet she’s celebrating in style. And how could she not? The “Dark Horse” singer is coming off another stellar year filled with new releases, headlining performances and new love (well, sort of). Join us now as we celebrate her special day with a look back at her best pics!

We’re sure Katy Perry won’t be having your average birthday celebration — not after the amazing year she’s had! First and foremost, we have to discuss her EPIC performance at the 2015 Super Bowl, where she road out onto the field on top a gigantic robotic lion while performing her mega-hit “Roar.” The pop superstar than proceeded to bring out Lenny Kravitz, who performed her first hit single, “I Kissed A Girl,” and Missy Elliott, who busted out her hits “Get Ur Freak On,” and “Work It.” Amazing!

Not long after that, Katy returned to the Grammys stage, where she sent chills down our spines with her haunting performance of  “By the Grace of God.” Shedding her zanier costumes for an angelic white column gown and matching cape, Katy belted her heart out while singing the song she wrote after her divorce from Russell Brand. On the Grammys red carpet, Katy told Ryan Seacrest that she chose that song to perform to “close out” her album Prism, which proved to be a huge success.

Meanwhile in the love department, Katy was rumored to have reunited with her ex John Mayer, 37, after the two were spotted holding hands at Allison Williams‘ wedding on Sept. 19. Pics of the pair on The Daily Mail show them all cozied up with each other during the ceremony, looking happy as ever. Prior to the wedding, the two were also spotted together at a Grateful Dead show on July 4, despite breaking up for a second time this year alone. Hey, whatever makes her happy!

While it seems unlikely that Katy will be releasing new music before the end of the year, the “Birthday” singer (that’s right, she has her own birthday song) she did revealed that she plans to hit the studio again once her tour ends. “I’m still on tour so when I get off tour is when I will start to refocus,” she said. “I have been on the road for almost a year and I am tired. I have done enough! I have done one-hundred-and-forty-one shows and I have ten more shows in South America, so that is what I am looking forward to right now.” Take all the time you need, Katy — you deserve it.

Join us in wishing Katy a very Happy Birthday in the comment below!

800,000 commit suicide from depression annually—DON

A professor of psychiatry, Joseph Adeyemi, has said that no fewer than 800,000 people commit suicide yearly due to depression, yet policies on mental challenges remain archaic.
Professor Adeyemi, who spoke in Lagos at the presentation of the book Shadows in the Mirror: the Many Faces of Depression, written by Dr. Vivian Ikem, said the Mental Health Act, enacted in the 1900s, was last reviewed in 1959 despite medical improvements made over the years.
He said: “Our laws should keep up with current situations, but we have remained static; the way we were in 1959.”

ISIS Reveals the Address of Navy SEAL who killed Osama Bin Laden unfazed by & Urged Terrorists to Kill Him!

THE Navy SEAL who shot dead Osama Bin Laden is undaunted by Islamic State (ISIS) death threats after his address was published by a British jihadi
