Ethiopia Nationals wins $60.000 first prize in Lagos City Marathon, as Governor Sanwo-Olu races with athletes.

 

Precisely at 8.03am on Saturday, Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu crossed the finished line of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, ceremoniously became the first athlete to hit the final ribbon.

The Marathon is an elite-labeled athletic fiesta which is always held in the second week of February of every year in Lagos. it kicks off at 6.am.  Sanwo-Olu said the event had consistently placed Lagos on the global radar.

Ethiopia's Runner, Ulfata Deresa, finished the 42 kilometre long race 11 minutes after Governor's arrival becomming the winner of the 7th Marathon's edition in the male category. he set a new finish time record of 2:11:58 and got $30,00 as cash price.  while two Kenyans, David Barmasai and Naibe Emmanuel, finished as first and second runner up  at 2:13:27 and 2:14:42 respectively getting a cash price of $20,000 and $15,000.

Ethiopian Marathoner, Dagne Siranesh Yirga, won the race in the female category at 2:33:50 and got a cash price of $30,000. Alemenesh Herehaguta and Naomi Maiyo both Kenyans finished ad first and second runner up. won $20,000 and $15,000 respectively. 



While Speaking, Governor Sanwo-Olu said,"one of the objectives of the event was to put Lagos on the global platform in the area of sport. He also said the goal of the marathon was to use sport as a tool to promote physical fitness, togetherness, and every virtue that can make humans progress and live a fulfuilling life.

While presenting the prize, he encouraged participants from Nigerian to brace themselves for the first prizes in the next year's edition.
