The First Kenyan National to go public with his HIV virus, Dr. Joe Muriki, has been confirmed dead. By NEPHAK, an organization that supports people living with HIV.
Dr. Joe who went public in 1977 and confirmed that he had been tested positive, lived with it for 35 years. After the confirmation, many Kenyans also went public with their status saying that Muriuki’s move had encouraged them.
The deceased was among the people living with HIV in the country who totally refused to use drugs for over 27 years. According to him, a balanced diet, regular exercise and being cheerful was key to the survival of the infected. Though, he later started using Kemron, a drug invented by Kenyan Scientists. Kemron, after it was introduced to the public in 1991, was later seen to be useless.
Dr. Muriuki, was a member of the regional task team that came up with an Act on how people living with HIV should be treated. His attempt to secure a seat in the East African Legislative Assembly in other to represent people living with HIV in 2017 was in vain.
